Until the age of 32 I had
spent my entire life evenly between living in Rhode Island and
the
Pacific island of Guam. It wasnt until taking a drawing
class at the University of Guam
that I began to see what was in store for me. Though I had never
taken an art class before
this I had always liked to draw and build things. This drawing
class lead to painting and design and before I knew it I was
taking all the art classes offered. I settled
on the 3 dimensional aspect of the work, mainly sculpture and
pottery.
My life changed in my Jr year when I saw a small leaded glass
window that my
pottery teacher, Dave Hall, had done years earlier. Dave gave
me the address to a company to get supplies. I got the catalog
and 4 months later my first order of supplies
finally arrived. Dave was no longer on island so from a library
book I learned my first lessons. I was hooked!
I went on and graduated with a major in Fine Arts with a certificate
to teach. For the next 6 years I taught art in the Guam public
schools finishing up at the St. Johns Prep
School. After these years of teaching I just had to pursue the
doing of art, not just teaching it. It was at this time in my
life that I met my wife, Sally, and then we set our plan into
motion. We would leave Guam and go to where I would be able to
do my work
full-time. Sally and I got married in May of 1982 and two months
later I landed a job at The Condon Studios in Cambridge, MA.
After working with glass for 8 years and never
ever seeing anyone else doing this work I was in a professional
studio environment. I found out that my self-taught skills were
pretty well advanced. After almost 3 years in
Cambridge, Sally and I decided to move to Sallys hometown
of San Diego. It's 23 years later and Im closing in on
my 21st year of operating Buddy Smith Glass Art Studio.
